What is GST?

Goods and Services Tax (GST) is India's unified indirect tax system that replaced multiple taxes like VAT, Service Tax, and Excise Duty from July 1, 2017. It follows a "one nation, one tax" principle with four main slabs: 5%, 12%, 18%, and 28%.

Do You Need to Register?

GST registration is mandatory if:

  • Annual turnover exceeds **₹40 lakh** (goods) or **₹20 lakh** (services)
  • You supply goods/services across state borders (regardless of turnover)
  • You sell on e-commerce platforms like Amazon, Flipkart
  • You are liable to pay tax under Reverse Charge Mechanism

GST Registration Process

  1. Visit gst.gov.in and apply under Part-A of REG-01 with PAN and mobile/email
  2. Receive a Temporary Reference Number (TRN)
  3. Complete Part-B with documents: PAN, Aadhaar, address proof, bank details, photographs
  4. GSTIN is issued within 7 working days if documents are in order

Understanding Your GSTIN

Your 15-digit GSTIN contains:

  • Digits 1-2: State code (e.g., 27 = Maharashtra)
  • Digits 3-12: PAN number
  • Digit 13: Entity number in the state
  • Digit 14: Z (default)
  • Digit 15: Check digit
